Inside the first self-sustainable city on Mars - by ABIBOO studio
Inside the first self-sustainable city on Mars - by ABIBOO studio
Construction of the city of Nüwa could start in 2054 and will see 250,000 people live inside the rock of a steep cliff. Freeze my body, melt me in 80 years, and send me to Mars. Architecture studio ABIBOO has revealed its plans to create the first self-sustainable city on the Red Planet, which is set to be ready for residents in 2100. The city will be called Nüwa and will be located at Tempe Mensa on one of the Martian cliffs. Its position inside a rock on the steep cliff will protect its residents from radiation and meteorites (cool!) while still giving them

A world for everyone
A world for everyone
The future that I imagine is one without discrimination. People will care about each other no matter what their gender, ethnicity or skin color is and will help each other out through any hardship they might encounter throughout their life, be it poverty, depression or an illness. Not only that, but people will care about the environment and climate change as well and will do their best to keep the world a better place, so that everyone can enjoy the treasures our world has to offer, in any place in the world.
Better world (Better world)
Better world (Better world)
I want a cleaner air, no pollution, no animal abuse. I also want better life for people that live in North Korea or Belarus. I want everyone to be nice to each other and don’t make wars, because a war is not good for anyone. I think the world in the future will be polluted , there will be less woods and trees and many things robots will do for humans. The air will be not clean and the water in rivers and oceans will be really polluted and there will be more garbage than there is now. If I will be alone to do this I can to nothing, but if the world will be together we change the future that everybody thinks will be bad. If I don’t really need to go somewhere with a car, I can walk, or use a bike, a scooter, or public transport, because when car goes it throws away the gas and turns the air to not fresh one and later it will smell bad. I buy bags, packs or straws that are made from paper or other material that are good for nature. Be friendly to the world, don’t make it more polluted, if we will be together we can change the future.
A future with minimal clinical plastic usage and disposal
A future with minimal clinical plastic usage and disposal
As an international student studying and working in the pharmaceutical industry, there are a lot of elements that I wish to see evolve in the upcoming years. Climate change and sustainability is becoming a more and more prominent issue. In the world of science like biology and chemistry, the use of single plastic is as important for creating a sterile environment as it is a problem creating high amounts of waste. I am hopeful that more biotechs invest into sustainability and create positive change towards the plastic waste generated during clinicals trials and laboratory research.
Respect to nature and human's life and wellbeing
Respect to nature and human's life and wellbeing
I imagine a future where people are all equal. Everyone feels safe in his/her country and people can travel, live, work wherever they want, without feeling disregarded or afraid. Cities are hospitable, people are openminded and have the faith that things are actually changed. People have found a way to protect the planet from pollution, nature has overcome the damage from human's unreasonable waste of nature's resources and cities are just a healthy part of nature. People feel happy in their enviroment and feel the need to protect the beauty they live in. Respect to nature and human's life and wellbeing.
Slow mobility and green cities
Slow mobility and green cities
There wouldn't be any cars in cities: only public transports and light transport means as bikes and scooters. With no need for car parking, there will be more spaces transformed in parks and gardens. With no need for large routes, all streets will be more green with trees and plant or vegetables containers. With less pollution, we will be able to eat fruits and aromatic plants grown in our own neighborhood. As teleworking will be the norm for some businesses, we will also be able to work from abroad time to time and this way enjoying longer stays and a slower way of travel. Using train will again be the norm; air plane will be limited to business and urgencies.
Future of education
Future of education
While thinking about the future, I will concentrate on the education system. In 20 years, I would like for the education system to be changed to be more suited for that generation. The system that we are using currently is extremely outdated. Children in this day and age are changing rapidly and it is partly due to the environment that we live in. That is why the system must be changed at least every decade or so to be suited for that generation so they could reach their maximum potential. Not only the achievements in various sciences are very important but psychological aspects as well. In the year 2040, there should be more attention drawn to learning about getting to know your emotions as well as other people’s emotions. As we all know, humans are social “animals” and I fear that because of rapidly evolving technologies and social media, people, especially young children, will start to lose the aspect of empathy toward themselves and others. So, to make the future better, there should be more attention drawn to the education system so that it would be relevant and effective for that generation.
Never never Land (Never never Land)
Never never Land (Never never Land)
Common sense and decency
The goal is freedom
The goal is freedom
Money is no longer created as debt by private institutions. Money is created debt free by a public body and it's benefits are aimed at society at large. For example a Hyperloop network is constructed to travel fast and without emissions in Europe and beyond. Also people have created their own currency in almost all regions to make sure the money can't be easily extracted out of the community. This regional and national money system co - operates well and is in balance with each other, people's needs and our ecological systems. Money flows around and around and is not accumulated or hoarded by anyone. People are very conscious about this and the functioning of these interdependent systems are transparant to them.
Tolerance and acceptance of the different-No racism, no xenophobia
Tolerance and acceptance of the different-No racism, no xenophobia
What I expect in 2040? People to be more open-minded and accept the changes that occur in their lives. As more people are coming from other countries the tolerance and acceptance of them as part of the society is empowering the reality and constructs a better future for everybody, hence this will be a great progress of our civilization. For that education , religion sciences and the political parties in general should target to this as it is a concrete element for everybody to live in prosperity and abundance.
A bountiful, biodiverse planet.
A bountiful, biodiverse planet.
Biodiversity all around us, also in our cities. Loud bird songs bring peace to the mind. Clear water directs my attention to the plants, fish and insects. Rivers and streams are restored, also in the forests that smell fresh and are so quiet that I hear a lynx sneak by. We truly live on a unique and miraculous planet called Earth. Humanity has been able to restore the Earth system processes that previously transgressed planetary boundaries. Humans have found a meaningful way of contributing to ecosystems rather than exploiting and polluting them, while still being able to use all the regenerative resources they need. This is celebrated as a huge achievement and could only be done by working together locally and internationally. This cooperation further inspires economic transformations and peace building so that quality of life is higher than ever before.
More hopeful thinking
More hopeful thinking
I want people to see the positive economic and climate ends of the current world situation. Poverty is decreasing at an exponential rate, meanwhile we all think that it is all getting worse.
More-than-human Together
More-than-human Together
People will have realised that in order to live well we need to work together and to share. New forms of legislation and governance have been developed to flatten hierarchies, creating global equalities. People work together to reduce the human population and to protect other species.
