As I sit here drinking my organic replacement coffee and eating a tasty grasshopper chocolate on Feb 17, 2050, I think back to how awful the world looked 25 years ago. On my hologram-phone I can see images from that time. Mass extinction, war in Ukraine and Palestine, Taiwan and China, a galloping climate crisis and climate refugees no one took in. Imagine that the breakthrough in fusion energy and battery technology in 2028 resulted in so much social profit that it led to regime change and democracy in Russia and China and that Trump had to leave power in the US. No one had to fight over fossil fuels and territories anymore. The energy surplus led to a shift in agriculture to small organic farms combined with large, technologically sustainable farms, freeing up huge areas for nature and finally turning the climate tide. In 2050, we still have a long way to go. More people need to go to school, equal access to health is a priority and more CO2 needs to be sucked out of the atmosphere even though emissions are at a global 0. But despite everything, there is hope and the future looks brighter than it did back in dystopian 2025.
