Summer started in February. Heat waves are as common as rain used to be, although the latter is now only known from legend. People check their air filters in the morning before going outside, and small battles rage for shady spots. The beaches used to be sand, now they're just barren earth with a mutant palm tree or two trying to survive. The birds have moved south - even further south, where there may still be something worth reaching. Drones hovering over the cities warn: don't stay in the sun too long.
There are still those trying to adapt. They grow rooftop gardens, paint shade on the roads. People have learned to smile in the heat. But when we close our eyes at night, we all know: the world used to be greener.
