One day in Europe in 2040

The sun is setting over Zagreb, or the castle will not sleep much longer. Trams run silently over the canal, using magnetic rails to carry passengers without bumping or starting. People walk along streets lined with solar lamps, and the air is fresh - something unmistakable in the past twenty years, when congestion and crowds still dominated European metropolises.

Start your day in a smart kitchen where artificial intelligence adjusts the temperature, prepares a delivery based on your food needs and books a hydrogen-powered self-driving taxi for your journey to business. I work at the European Institute for Climate Stabilisation, where my team oversees "climatic shields" - innovative satellites that regulate the Earth's temperature and reduce the effects of global warming.

While I am travelling, I am looking across the horizon and seeing how Europe has arrived at this point. In the wake of the energy crisis of 2025, the EU has invested huge resources in renewable energy sources. By 2035, fossil fuels will have been used up, and all buildings will have solar, wind, electricity and fusion energy only. Smart buildings are the standard, and new technologies allow for the regeneration of nature - unpaved motorways are replaced by urban gardens and noises that help to maintain ecological balance.

Thanks to quantum communication, information is transmitted instantaneously, without any hassle. Borders between countries are no longer a barrier - people travel freely thanks to unique digital identification and the EU's universal citizenship.

At the end of the day, I go to a futuristic restaurant where robot chefs prepare a meal from local, lab-grown sastojaka. The food is delicious, tasty and nutritionally adapted to each guest.

As I continue to cook through the park's draught of wood, which vaporises CO2 and converts it into pure oxygen, I feel proud. Europe 2040 is not only technologically advanced - it has become a sustainable, humane society where nature and people live in harmony.

With a smile on your face, think: "The future is brighter than we ever dreamed."

Whatever we do to improve the world is not enough if we spend as much as 8 hours a day working. Waiting for the weekend to live is barbaric in 2024. We should work 4 hours a day with an adequate salary and we all know that part-time work exists but it must be implored and those who want to work 4 hours earning less are considered lazy.

By 2040, I would like the way we deal with food and public space to have fundamentally changed. An ideal image I have in mind, based on the projects I am working on, such as Fruitstraat Gent, is that cities have been completely transformed into green, edible landscapes. In this future, cities are not only functional living spaces, but also productive ecosystems where fruit trees, vegetables and herbs grow lushly in streets, squares and parks. Everyone has access to healthy and local food thanks to the myriad of commons such as communal gardens and fruit trees, where residents have free access to pick. The idea of a short and sustainable food chain is fully embedded in urban life: people harvest their own food or buy it directly from neighborhood cooperatives, without the intervention of polluting, long distribution chains. In addition, there is a broad awareness of the importance of community and participation. Speculative design projects are no longer just a niche, but have been given a central role in shaping urban development. Residents are actively involved in designing the future of their city, with participation and engagement at the heart of policy decisions. Each district has its own projects and experiments that constantly contribute to the improvement of the living environment, both socially, economically and ecologically. This vision of the future would result in a healthier, cohesive and more resilient society in which people not only have a connection with each other, but also with nature and the food they consume.
