When my parents emigrated (from former Yugoslavia) and settled in Vienna (Austria) they moved into a flat which was free of charge but they had to take care about it, e.g. cleaned it regularly, supported the flat owners and residents when they need something (especially the elderly), cleared the snow in winter in front of the building, etc.
As foreigners they got the chance to immediately be in exchange and communication with the locals. Both sides were dependent on each other and gained respect, trust and understanding! I grew up as daughter of immigrants but became an Austrian citizen. I had never the feeling that I was less worth or less important, in the contrary. These supported housing vanished with the years. Businesses took over and this possibility of easy integration and living together disappeared.
In 2040 I wish that living together with immigrants, elderly people, young families, etc. is fostered and supported. New housing concepts shall tackle the combined taking care of elderly, disabled, etc. at the same time supporting families with children and integration of new residents. Joint open spaces and living rooms can foster exchange, integration, tolerance and learning from each other, reducing loneliness of elderly people and singles.
