A Day in 2040: Europe's Green Renaissance

In 2040, I woke up in a city that felt alive—literally. Trees lined every street, their canopies filtering sunlight onto solar-paneled roads. Buildings were covered in vertical gardens, producing food and oxygen for residents. This was Europe’s Green Renaissance, a transformation sparked in the 2020s when leaders finally prioritized sustainability over profit.

Between 2025 and 2035, Europe transitioned to 100% renewable energy, banned single-use plastics, and invested heavily in circular economies. By 2040, waste was almost nonexistent, as everything was either reused or composted. Community gardens and urban farms had replaced parking lots, making fresh, local food available to everyone.

Today, I biked to my job—no cars here—at a local cooperative where we design AI systems to support biodiversity. The air was fresh, the skies clear, and everyone seemed healthier and happier. I have grown older. Together with my partner, I fulfilled my dream of building another house - after all, there was still room in the garden of the old house! It's not any smaller than the old house, but the layout is better. We have moved into the upper apartment - the office in the basement is no longer needed since we retired from work. It now serves as an apartment when children and grandchildren come to visit. Our neighborhood is constantly changing. Separations and deaths bring change. The houses don't stay empty for long. It is very popular to live in the village. People still look out for each other here and living together works. There are lots of activities for young and old, and most people are keen to get involved in voluntary work. All in all, it's a good place to grow older.

I would like to see threats of global warming has been taken seriously and measures to halt its progression is in full force. I would also like to see either IQ tests or common sense tests for people, in charge of government. I also hope religion not to have such a strong hold over weak minds.

German politics should be completely rethought, no more party coercion in the parliamentary groups and each party must vote on draft laws. The absence of party coercion means that every member of parliament can also vote in favor of a law of the other party, but also against bills of his party, so that no party would have to come to power alone or through a coalition and a freer democracy would be created.
