A day in Europe in 2050

The sun rises over Paris, but the city is unrecognizable. The sky is clear, free of fine particles thanks to ambitious environmental policies implemented since 2025. The streets are silent, not because they are deserted, but because vehicles are entirely electric or hydrogen-powered, and a large proportion of journeys are made by bicycle or automated public transport.

I leave my eco-designed apartment, whose green façade captures CO2 and refreshes the ambient air. My building produces more energy than it consumes, thanks to solar panels integrated into the windows and rooftop wind turbines. Before setting off, I consult my personal AI assistant, which suggests an optimized itinerary based on my schedule and the number of people using public transport.

Today, I work remotely, but I decide to join a coworking space on the banks of the Seine, set up in a rehabilitated former industrial wasteland. Since 2035, telecommuting has become widespread, drastically reducing traffic jams and promoting a better work-life balance. AI and robotization have automated a large proportion of repetitive tasks, freeing up time for creative, human activities.

During my lunch break, I join a neighborhood restaurant that serves only products from local regenerative agriculture. In 2030, Europe adopted a food pact aimed at eliminating mass production that is harmful to the environment and our health.

A day in Europe in 2050

The sun rises over Paris, a city transformed. The air is pure, the green facades of buildings capture CO₂, and autonomous public transport silently crisscrosses the streets. Since 2025, Europe has banked on energy sobriety, massive building renovation and the development of renewable energies.

This morning, I'm taking a hydrogen-powered taxi-drone to my office, a coworking space in the middle of nowhere, designed to adapt to the hybrid needs of workers. Artificial intelligence optimizes repetitive tasks, freeing up time for creativity and innovation.

At lunchtime, I eat at a zero-waste canteen where local produce, grown in vertical urban farms, takes pride of place. Europe has revolutionized its agriculture, reducing dependence on imports and preserving biodiversity.

At the end of the day, I head for a park where an urban reforestation project has transformed former avenues into veritable green lungs. Here, nature and technology coexist in harmony.

Before heading home, I take part in an online citizens' assembly. Since 2035, a European democratic platform has enabled everyone to influence political decisions. The Europe of 2050 is more sustainable, more united and more democratic. A dream come true.

Szkoła przyszłości
By 2040, the school will be student-friendly. It will teach you how to acquire and verify information, not just how to reproduce it. Children will use new technologies in a wise and sensible way thanks to the fact that there will be a modern education system. A system that will not be based only on assessments that are not an objective evaluation of knowledge. A system that will educate children in areas that are close to their time. I hope for an education system that will teach young people how to distinguish real information from fakenews.

Moderní digitální věk
I would like even more advanced modern technologies, such as self-driving cars, to be all the more digital and modern. I would certainly like much more modern buildings here in Prague, a lot of skyscrapers and modern glazed buildings, more large shopping centers, etc. I would very much like to see more American fast foods in the Czech Republic, to significantly expand the number of Subway branches, to have Dunkin Donuts, Arbys, Baskin Robins, Little Ceasars, Dennys and many other brands from the USA come here. Walmart would be great.

Čistý svět
It's an ordinary morning in 2040. The sun is shining through the window of my apartment and the city is slowly coming to life behind it. Outside, there is a quiet electric tram that connects neighborhoods without the need for cars. Transport has changed significantly over the last 20 years – combustion engines are a thing of the past, streets are quieter and cleaner. I read a little news at breakfast. Most people today work from home for at least part of the week, which has helped reduce stress and congestion. But I am looking forward to the office – work is different than before, more collaborative and less routine. On the way, I stop at a small bakery where the clerk serves me fresh bread wrapped in reusable packaging. Waste is no longer carried here – most shops have switched to a circular economy where materials are put back into circulation. In the evening I walk through the park, which used to be a parking lot. Cities have adapted to climate change, more trees have been planted, and every piece of free space serves people. Life in 2050 is not perfect, but in many ways it is better – slower, more sustainable and focused on quality instead of quantity.
