Beneath the Glass Skies

By 2040, Earth was unrecognizable. The scars of climate change had etched themselves across every continent. Rising seas had swallowed parts of coastal cities, while droughts and wildfires claimed once fertile lands. The Earth, though still beautiful, now bore an eerie, fractured majesty—an intricate mix of human resilience and nature's unrelenting wrath.

In New London, a sprawling megacity built atop the ruins of old London, a young woman named Lena tightened her augmented reality glasses and stepped outside. Above her, glass domes shimmered, shielding the city from the temperamental weather outside—acid rain, superstorms, and the occasional suffocating heatwave. These domes, known as Climate Bubbles, had become humanity's final defense against an environment it could no longer control.

Lena paused at the edge of the dome’s district barrier, watching workers in exoskeleton suits reinforce its joints. Beyond the translucent wall lay the Blightlands, a wasteland of dead soil, skeletal trees, and the ruins of smaller towns long abandoned. The land was barren, save for the scavenger drones zipping around to recover rare metals from old tech and the occasional crew of climate engineers planting carbon-absorbing bio-machines disguised as moss.

Life inside the domes was far from perfect. The air was clean, water was drinkable, and food was plentiful, though most of it came from vertical farms that spiraled skyward in shades of green and silver. But the economy was tightly controlled, dominated by mega-corporations that had stepped in to do what governments couldn't during the late 2020s. The tech giant Solaris ran everything from energy grids to public AI, its CEO seen as a messiah to some and a tyrant to others.

visions
Today's cities are more evenly populated. They are made up mainly of small, almost self-sufficient buildings, which produce their own heating and cooling thanks to thermal paints and vegetation covering roofs and walls. Connected, everything can be done by thought... opening, heating, ordering... housework is done autonomously by specialized robots. We don't meet much, since we go out less and virtual contact makes us almost present, thanks to 3D holograms. Human beings are more inward-looking, no longer travelling to meet or work.

un monde sans problèmes
Firstly, to have leaders who are in touch with everyday life, and who are therefore paid the same as the majority of citizens, which would show how the majority of people live. Decisions would then be taken on the basis of real life, not on the basis of assumptions made by people who are disconnected from it. Protecting others and our resources, helping everyone according to their needs. The participation of all in the common effort. In the event of incivilities, misdemeanors or worse, crimes or misdemeanors, firm justice without fail and no laxity! Respect for traditions, for the past, which must serve as a positive example to avoid repeating past mistakes and to develop what has been positive. Will the dream ever become reality????

Futur régulé
In the future, we would be assisted by artificial intelligence, but not replaced by it. We would work in harmony with it. We'd have good salaries, and new technologies would enable us to travel fast without polluting as much as an airplane. We'd be able to visit the world, guilt-free and without destroying the planet. Every culture would have its place and be free. Wars would no longer exist. A universal law, or at least a legal text, would define rights, duties and punishable crimes for the whole world. These laws would be voted on universally by all the world's citizens. Voting would become compulsory, in the form of monthly questionnaires for which we would be given time to make individual decisions. This time could also be paid for, to ensure that every citizen of the world is involved in global and local decision-making. It would also be permissible to have laws adapted locally, and to move to the area where the law suits us. This zone would be managed independently, and the laws applying to it would apply only in that zone. Prisons would also be better managed. Prisons are places of punishment, not relaxation. There would be many more of them, to have more room for all types of crime (perhaps zoned by crime) so that justice could be properly and fully applied. As for healthcare, a great deal of investment would be made in research into as yet unknown treatments, enabling us to cure more and more illnesses.

United in Diversity
In 2040, I would like to see a future where cultural diversity and inclusion are at the heart of every community in Europe. Imagine cities where people from all backgrounds, languages, and traditions come together to share ideas, collaborate, and celebrate their differences. Schools would teach multiple languages from an early age, not only to help communication but to promote understanding of different cultures. Technology would make it easier for people to connect across borders, creating virtual cultural exchange programs where students and professionals could collaborate on projects.
